The number of witnesses you need for a civil wedding in your state

In the United States, each state has its own law regarding the number of witnesses required in a Civil Wedding Ceremony.

Please note that in states where the law requires witnesses, they must have a photo I.D. in order to qualify.

 The states are listed alphabetically

ALABAMA: Witnesses are not required by Alabama law.

ALASKA: law requires the ceremony must be witnessed by at least two (2) adults

ARIZONA: Marriage licenses must be signed by the couple, two (2) adult witnesses at least 18 years old as well as the officiating minister.

ARKANSAS: No witnesses are required.

CALIFORNIA: One (1) witness but a 2nd witness may sign the license too.

COLORADO: The law does not require witnesses.

CONNECTICUT: The law does not require witnesses.

DELAWARE: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.DC: No witnesses are required.

FLORIDA: No witnesses are required.

GEORGIA: If the ceremony officiant does not complete the form, two (2) witnesses at least 18 years old are needed in order to obtain the marriage certificate.

HAWAII: No witnesses are required.

IDAHO: No witnesses are required.

ILLINOIS: No witnesses are required.

INDIANA: No witnesses are required.

IOWA: The law requires one (1) adult witness over 18 years old when applying for the marriage license.

KANSAS: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

KENTUCKY: as well as the officiant must sigh the marriage license.

LOUISIANA: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

MAINE: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old as well as the officiant must sigh the marriage license.

MARYLAND: No witnesses are required.

MASSACHUSETTS: No witnesses are required.

MICHIGAN: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

MINNESOTA: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 16 years old.

MISSISSIPPI: No witnesses are required.

MISSOURI: No witnesses are required.

MONTANA: No witnesses are required.

NEBRASKA: Two (2) adult witnesses are required.

NEVADA: One (1) adult witness as well as the officiant.

NEW HAMPSHIRE: No witnesses are required.

NEW JERSEY: No witnesses are required.

NEW MEXICO: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

NEW YORK: the law requires One (1) adult witness at least 18-years old..

NORTH CAROLINA: Two (2) adult witnesses are required.

NORTH DAKOTA: Two (2) adult witnesses are required.

OHIO: No witnesses are required.

OKLAHOMA: Two (2) adult witnesses are required.

OREGON: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

PENNSYLVANIA: Witnesses are not required by law.

RHODE ISLAND: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

SOUTH CAROLINA: No witnesses are required.

SOUTH DAKOTA: the law requires One (1) adult witness.

TENNESSEE: No witnesses are required.

TEXAS: No witnesses are required

.UTAH: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

VERMONT: No witnesses are required by law.

VIRGINIA: No witnesses are required

.WASHINGTON STATE: The law requires Two (2) witnesses, at least 18 years old.

WEST VIRGINIA: No witnesses are required.

WISCONSIN: Two (2) competent adult witnesses.

WYOMING: Two (2) competent adult witnesses.
