What You Need to Know Before Hiring Wedding Vendors.

• Most wedding vendors, professionals and service providers price their product or service higher, if they know it is for a wedding.  Other event such as a corporate event, birthday etc. are usually quoted a lower price.

Don’t ask me why they add hidden service fees thus making wedding products more expensive than if they were not for a wedding. For example: a caterer may charge for a business event as much as 30% to 50% less than a wedding at the same location with the same number of guests. The main reason: A satisfied business may become a repeat customer. A special party may inspire other parties. A wedding is usually a one time deal.

• It has been proven by tests and studies that anything relating to “wedding” is more expensive.  So, watch out for quotes from reception venues, a limousine service, catering, purchasing gowns/dresses, florists, entertainmnt,  photographers, videographers etc. They all overcharge for weddings.

• So, when you first contact a vendor, professional or service provider by phone, before your first meeting, ask them for a quote for an EVENT on-DATE, TIME, Number of GUESTS. Do not mention WEDDING. Ask for a price quote for an EVENT or GET-TOGETHER, a PARTY etc. Well, you are telling them the absolute truth! Your wedding will most certainly be an EVENT, a CELEBRATION PARTY, and a GET TOGETHER of family and friends from near and far.

• Since wedding is a “service-driven” market, vendors, professionals and service providers make sure to charge for the service involved. This is why wedding items have much higher mark-ups than the same items obtained for any non-wedding.

Did you hear about a salon that charges enormous alteration fees? If they believe that you purchase a prom gown, they will charge a fraction. Actually, as hard as it is to believe, some bridal salons even charge for any help you will get from their “professionals” adding very high mark-up to the price of the gown/dress. After all, they help you select right size, give you recommendations, make suggestions, offer other items you may want and so on. They have to charge for such “labor intensive help” don’t they?

But how much? When it comes to wedding gowns and wedding dresses WATCH OUT for added alteration fees. My granddaughter was quoted a $400.00 charge for alterations the salon “specialist” recommended.  The alteration were actually not needed. Of course she refused the service only to find out that her gown actuall fit perfectly as it was.

• Compare the prices on the Internet or in a department store, and you may find your dream gown/dress for less. Department stores often have a sale,  and usually have a clearance rack. As to Online vendors most do not encounter the high cost of having a”brick and mortar” present and pass the saving to their customers. Since they serve a much larger clientel Internet purchases are generally more affordable.

• Always negotiate to remove or avoid the hidden service charges such as, corking charges, cake cutting charges, cleanup fees, travel fees etc. Find a way to lower your wedding needs estimates and save money. Vendors, professionals and service provider who want you to hire them should be willing to work with you while still profiting.

• BEWARE! You will come across many Vendors, professionals and service provider who will insist that you commit to hiring, ordering or buying right NOW. The most common reason most give is that they have other brides and/or grooms who are interested and are ready to place a deposit. Don’t believe it. It is only a selling tactic. Because wedding vendors are experienced sales people, not only do they charge high markups, but they’ll do everything in their power to get you. They will even make you think that you got a great deal in the process.

IMPORTANT:

Always interview at lease 3 vendors and choose the one you liked best before hiring them. for example: 3+ florists, 3+ bakers, 3+ entertainer, 3+ venues etc.
